A Chicago man who spoke of his desire to leave the gang life in a featured CNN documentary has fallen victim to the gun violence plaguing the Windy City.

According to the Chicago Tribune, police discovered the body of 22-year-old Lee McCullum with a fatal gunshot wound to the head just south of the Roseland neighborhood early Thursday morning.

McCullum death comes just weeks after the April 23rd shooting death of his girlfriend Tiara Parks.

CNN’s “Chicagoland” featured McCullum’s life, which went from running with gangs to graduating high school with honors and was even named prom king.

“I never thought I would give this person an award because we had some tough times back in that first and second year. Lee McCullum, come on up,” said Liz Dozier, who at the time was the principal of Fenger High School when “Chicagoland” aired.

“Fenger helped me get in college. I didn’t any hopes and no dreams of going,” McCullum said at the time.

McCullum graduated in 2013 and he even went to live with relatives on a farm just to flee the streets.

“I’m am just trying to surround myself around some positiveness,” he said in 2013.

However, his worst fears became a tragic reality after he was shot to death in the early morning hours Thursday on the same Chicago streets he had sought to leave behind for a better life.

“I’m getting emotional. But whoever did this, I wish they catch them. And I feel sorry for his parents, too,” said George L. McCullum, victim’s grandfather.

“We come into our office Monday morning and people talk about this number of people were shot, this number of people were killed,” said Dozier.

She added, “It becomes numbers, right. But Lee was a real person, he had a story, and a lot of viewers got to know him and his story, he slowly made this progression into the great kid we knew to be: really involved in school, basketball team, just a great kid.”

However, a year after graduating, McCullum was shot in the leg. And just three weeks ago, family members said he was with his girlfriend when she was gunned down on Chicago South Side.

“I really am going to miss him,” his grandfather said.

Chicago police officials had considered McCullum a documented gang member. Detectives said, “he was shot and left for dead on the street, which is where he died.”

Investigators have made no arrests in McCullum’s murder but said the investigation is ongoing.
