A Washington State teacher was the victim of an after school attack on campus after he was hit on the head and later discovered by another colleague with a zip tie around his neck, authorities said Friday.

According to Police Sgt. Ken Seuberlich, investigators, are reviewing video surveillance searching for clues in the attack that occurred at Bothell High School, located 12 miles northeast of Seattle.

Seuberlich said the victim identified as 63-year-old shop teacher Cal Pygott was released from a Seattle hospital on Thursday evening.

School officials canceled class on Friday as police conducted an investigation into Thursday afternoon’s assault.

At a Friday morning news conference on campus, Seuberlich would not speculate if the perpetrator could have been a student, faculty member or stranger and maintained the attack was a rare occurrence for the quiet suburban town.

“I don’t want to speculate about the type of person who would do that,” Seuberlich said.

Authorities said Pygott could not identify who assaulted him and gave no indications of any previous threats made against him.

According to Larry Francois, superintendent of the Northshore School District, Police will have an increased presence when classes resume on Monday.

Francois said in a letter to parents that school officials were taking the necessary precautions to ensure all students and staff felt safe at the high school upon their return on Monday.

He also stressed safety steps they can take, which includes staying alert for unusual people and situations on campus, and re-directing visitors to the office if they have not checked in.

Seuberlich hailed the teacher who discovered Pygott and called for help. “I am very happy that another employee was here to render aid and call 911,” he said.

Northshore School District officials said the attack occurred about two hours after school ended for the day in an isolated area of campus near the school’s woodshop.

Police have placed resource officer at the high school, and Seuberlich stated that they were going to add more security to ensure the safety of students and staff until the assailant was arrested.
