A massive gun battle between Mexican authorities and a cartel convoy resulted in six heavily armed gunmen killed just south of the Texas border.

According to Breitbart News, the shootout occurred on Wednesday along a stretch of roadway connecting Matamoros to San Fernando. Law enforcement officials said that the gun battle erupted after a unit of Federal Police officers encountered a convoy consisting of three vehicles, who opened fire on authorities.

The officers repelled the attack and in the interim managed to kill five suspected operatives who were in a white Chevy pickup truck.

The gunmen’s heavy weaponry led one of the police vehicles during the battle with a military grade .50 caliber rifle.

Mexican law enforcement officials have identified two of the cartel gunmen as Jose Manuel Medina-Mendez and Miguel Munoz Herrera but released no further information.

Police sources say cartel gunmen utilize the rural dirt roads around the San Fernando region to conceal their movements from authorities but didn’t say which cartel the operatives were associated with.

Officials also haven’t indicated whether the federal police encountered the cartel convoy accidentally, or if the operatives were part of a security detail of a top organized crime figure, who were dispatched to engage authorities so their boss could escape.
