A young Chicago teenage girl was shot to death in a drive-by shooting while she was in a car with a 28-year-old gang member, the Daily Mail reported.

Authorities say the events unfolded as Veronica Lopez, who was only 15 years old, was riding as a passenger in a Jeep when a black Nissan opened fire at approximately 1:30 am early Saturday.

The driver of the Jeep, who has yet to be identified, was struck in the arm, yet he managed to drive the both of them to a local hospital.

Because of the extent of her injuries, Lopez needed to be transferred to another hospital but was pronounced dead at 3 am. No arrests have been made.

Lopez was one of three people murdered over the long holiday weekend.

Police have also reported that 12 additional people have been injured in shootings in the Chicago area between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The mother of the young girl, Diana Mercado, wept as she reported her plans to relocate with her daughter to Florida. An individual was shot in an alleyway behind their residence just a week prior. The mother explained that the driver of the Jeep was Lopez’s friend, but did not reveal his name. She said in a statement to the Chicago Tribune “My baby was not even in a gang to be killed.”

“I just loved my daughter, and I miss everything about her,” said Mercado.

Chicago has faced a drastic increase in homicides just this year alone. Reports indicate that murders have increased by 52% in the city compared to the same period last year, with a total of 233 fatalities. The New York Times further reported that shootings have increased by 50%.

The first homicide victim, which occurred on Friday night, was a 25-year-old male who was shot while sitting in his parked car around 11:30 pm. Just six hours later, a 23-year-old man was killed after he got into an altercation with two others at a BP gas station. As a result, he was shot directly in the head. No arrests have been made for either of the homicides.
