Mayhem erupted in the French city of Marseille as police clashed with thousands of rowdy soccer fans who descended upon Marseille for the opening match of the Euro 2016 football championship between England and Russia.

The rioting occurred despite security at an unprecedented high level for the month-long tournament following the deadly attacks in Paris by Islamic terrorists. Fears escalated that Euro 2016 would become a prime target for further attacks.

Groups of local youths instigated the visiting Brits setting off confrontations, and clashes with police in riot gear.

On Friday, an afternoon of drinking and singing again turned ugly.

Raucous barechested English fans, chanting “ISIS, where are you now,” tossed everything from chairs, bottles, and cans at police in riot gear while dodging tear gas canisters on Friday.

British supporters also serenaded attractive women who walked by with the loud chants such as “get your t**s out for the lads”.

Fans smashed cafe windows and hurled bottles, glasses, and chairs at each other, while a man had his throat slashed. Additionally, several supporters assaulted another man before tossing him into the harbor.

Additionally, ESPN reported that one fan was left fighting for his life after suffering a severe head wound.

Violence continued on Saturday ahead of England’s kickoff with Russia, as both sets of fans clashed.

Riot police used tear gas to disperse supporters of both nations who hurled everything from insults, bottles, chairs and whatever else they could grab.

The scenes further marred the reputation of England’s soccer fans following the dark days of hooliganism in the 1970s and ‘80s.

English football fans of late have drawn wide praise for their behavior in more recent tournaments.
