A gunman opened fire as Christina Grimmie signed autographs for fans after her show in Florida, killing “The Voice” star before shooting and killing himself, according to the New York Post.

Grimmie’s publicist, Heather Walsh, said in an email on early Saturday that “we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord.”

The Orlando Police Department has also confirmed on their Twitter page that the singer had passed away.

Grimmie, who was originally from New Jersey, finished in third place on NBC’s hit show “The Voice” back in 2014. Grimmie competed on Maroon 5 star Adam Levine’s team. The singer amassed a significant following on YouTube as a teenager, gaining popularity for her renditions of various hit songs, which earned her millions of views.

In a news release, authorities confirmed that the 22-year-old woman performed with the band Before You Exit at the Plaza Live in Orlando, which ended around 10 p.m. Grimmie was shot as she signed autographs at a merchandise stand.

The singer’s brother tackled the gunman who then shot and killed himself during the altercation. The killer’s identity has yet to be identified, and police are currently unsure of a motive. As the investigation continues, officials credit the singer’s brother for preventing the man from hurting others at the concert.

Sgt. Wanda Miglio said in an interview that about 60 to 100 people were in attendance at the concert, and only a handful of them remained following the shooting.

Miglio said that she was unsure what security at the venue was like and how the gunman was able to smuggle two guns inside. She said it is also unclear if any off-duty officers were present at the concert, saying “it was just a casual event.”

Just minutes before the show, Grimmie posted a video encouraging fans to see her perform at the concert.

Adam Levine posted a photo of the two of them on Instagram just before the confirmation of her death; the caption said: “I’m sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie. We are all praying hard that you can pull through this … this just isn’t fair.”

When reports of the shooting spread throughout social media, the hashtag #PrayforChristina became top trending on Twitter, however once her death had been confirmed, #RIPChristina became the top trending hashtag as millions expressed their sorrow.

“There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice,” “The Voice” posted on their official Twitter page.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Grimmie moved to L.A in 2012 after joining Selena Gomez on tour.

In 2014, Grimmie’s brother told the newspaper in an interview: “I’m done being surprised by cool things she does. She’s very talented, and she’s worked incredibly hard — it’s a dangerous combination.”
