A mother in the Bronx, New York tried to protect her three young children from gunfire when she was shot to death when she stepped into the path of a bullet that tore through a park outside of their apartment on Saturday night.

Jessica White, 29, saw a man dressed in all black open fire on the playground at the John Adams Houses in Longwood at approximately 10:15 p.m. White jumped into the bullet’s path and was struck by a bullet right below her heart, according to her mother who watched the violent scene unfold.

White’s frantic final words were to save her children.

“She said, ‘Mommy! The kids!’ ” Gola White told the Daily News on Saturday night.

She said her daughter cried that she had to “go get the kids.”

Then, her mother said, “My daughter got up and hit the ground.”

Investigators at the scene believe that the violence erupted due to a gang altercation. The man was described as wearing a black ski mask when he approached the park, The New York Daily News reported.

The heartbroken grandmother was sitting on a park bench next to her daughter inside the public housing complex on Westchester Ave when the gunman opened fire. The suspect was allegedly targeting a group of men sitting nearby in the playground.

Gola White said in a statement: “I believe that the bullets were for them, but bullets don’t have no name, bullets don’t have no direction, so of course, my daughter stood up she got hit, under her heart. And she’s gone.”

Gola said that just moments before the devastating events, she was laughing and joking with her daughter.

Gola said, “My daughter was an innocent mother sitting out here while her kids were playing in the park.”

She continued, “Never did nothing to nobody. Just got off of work today. Just sitting out here to let the kids get a little bit of air and this is what happens.”

The inconsolable grandmother said that this was her third child that was killed at the public housing complex.

According to police sources, cops are looking to locate the shooter and are trying to determine just who he was trying to target.

After her daughter was shot, Gola White grabbed her three grandchildren and ran inside. Gola’s two sons ran outside to perform CPR, but she was soon taken to Lincoln Hospital where she passed away.

Gola White said: “My daughter’s not coming back. She’s not coming back. Who’s gonna pay for my daughter’s death right now? … “This is not my first,” she said. “I lost three kids here. I lost three kids.”
