Police in Chicago have opened an investigation into a gang member who purportedly captured his own murder in real-time on a Facebook video post.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Antonio Perkins, who was gunned down in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that the video which is believed to be authentic was discovered on the man’s Facebook page by investigators.

The footage portrays a man recording himself before gunshots start to ring out, the camera then falls to the ground in grass spattered with blood.

Guglielmi says that Perkins was sentenced to two years in prison on a drug charge and was on authorities’ “strategic subjects list” of people determined to be likely targets or suspects in gang-related violence.

Although police didn’t reveal Perkins’ gang association, images posted on Perkins’ Facebook page indicates that he was a member of the Vice Lords.
