The wife of a farmer in upstate New York, who allegedly killed her husband with a pitchfork and then buried his body in manure, has been sentenced to 25 years behind bars.

Charlene Mess, from Attica, NY, pleaded guilty to manslaughter back in April 2015 for the murder of her husband of more than 30 years, Douglas Mess.

According to the Daily Mail, 49-year-old woman was fighting with her husband at their dairy farm right before she reportedly beat him numerous times with a pitchfork. After that, inside their barn, she shot him right in the head with their .22 caliber rifle.

Last Thursday, District Attorney Donald O’Geen, said in court that the woman also tied her husband’s feet and hands with bailing wire.

She then obtained an electronic feed cart to haul his body to another area in the barn, where she picked it up with another item of equipment and then took it to bury it in a pile of manure.

According to prosecutors, the woman had believed the body would quickly decay and never be found.

The victim’s son called authorities to report him missing and organized a seven-hour search that concluded when the body was discovered only about 100 yards from the couple’s home.

The suspect even joined the search for her husband, looking for him while riding her horse around the farm.

In a statement, O’Geen said, “This sentence will not bring Doug back to his family, but at least it will keep his killer away from society for a very long time.”

O’Geen added, “The family will now go forward remembering Doug as a hardworking, gentle and kind man who was always there for his family and community.”

Laura Scott, the victim’s sister, and a friend spoke in court.

Scott said: “This past year has been rough on a lot of us who knew Doug, but especially his sons,” WROC-TV reported.

She continued, “They lost their father to a murder, and the more horrifying thing is it’s their mother who did it.”
