Former NFL running back Zurlon Tipton Jr. died after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach while he was placing personal items into a bag holding two firearms at a car dealership on Tuesday, police said.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Tipton’s death and said an autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday, according to the Detroit News.

Police said the 26-year-old was initially alert as emergency responders transported him to the hospital and indicated that the incident was being treated as an accidental discharge.

“The department has been notified by staff at St John (Hospital on Moross) that the individual that suffered the gunshot wound has passed away due to his injuries,” Roseville Police Deputy Chief Donald Glandon wrote in a statement Tuesday.

Mark DeMara, the general manager of Mike Riehl’s Roseville Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Dealership where the shooting occurred, released a statement which read: “A gentleman brought a vehicle into our service department between 9 and 9:30 this morning because of a transmission leak in his vehicle. At some point, he reached into a duffel bag that was in the passenger seat, and as he reached inside, the pistol discharged and shot the gentleman in the abdomen.”

Tipton, an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan, played running back for the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons in 2014-2015.

Former Indianapolis Colts teammate, wide receiver Donte Moncrief, went on Instagram to express his shock and sadness over the loss of Tipton.

“It’s crazy I just got that phone call bro cause I just talk to you, and we talked about the future and teams giving you your second chance,” Moncrief wrote.

He added: “No matter where I’m at or what team I’m on ill have that 37 on my wrist or glove.”
