Mexican Federal Police arrested a top member of a drug cartel in the city of Metepec, located in the State of Mexico on Friday.

Officials confirmed the arrest of Nicandro Barrera Medrano also known as ‘El Nica,’ the alleged founder of La Familia Michoacana, the organization that would later become Los Caballeros Templarios or the Knight Templar Cartel, based in the strife-ridden state of Michoacan.

Before his arrest, Barrera Medrano capture was considered one of the top priorities of the Mexican government. He was the subject of a $ 3 million reward.

According to Proceso, elements of the Division of Research for the Federal Police managed to track down the leading cartel figure at a home in the municipality of Metepec.

Once investigators confirmed his identity, officials ordered a successful operation that led to his arrest without having firing a single shot.

Law enforcement officials in the U.S. and Mexico said Barrera Medrano was allegedly responsible for managing proceeds derived from illegal activities such as the trafficking of illegal narcotics to the United States, along with kidnapping, extortion, and numerous murders.

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office said the search for Barrera Medrano recently intensified after officials received credible intelligence that the subject was forming an armed group to avenge the death of Carlos Rosales, a co-founder of the Knights Templar whose bullet-riddled body was discovered along with three other men on the side of a highway back on December 28th, in the western state of Michoacan.
