A former member of the military who survived three tours in Iraq was among the fallen police officers tragically killed in Thursday night’s sniper attack in Dallas.

Officials said Dallas Police officer Patrick Zamarripa, a 32-year-old Mexican-American was one of five cops shot dead by sniper targeting members of law enforcement during a demonstration over the recent fatal police shootings of two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Zamarripa’s family said he joined the Navy right after high school, serving eight years including three tours in Iraq before returning to his native Texas and joining the Dallas Police Dept.

“Patrick would bend over backward to help anybody. He’d give you his last dollar if he had it. He was always trying to help people, protect people,” his father, Rick Zamarripa, told The Associated Press by phone Friday. “As tough as he was, he was patient, very giving.”

Zamarripa, who died just one month before his 33rd birthday, leaves behind a wife, toddler and middle school-age stepchild.

“He went over there (to Iraq) and didn’t get hurt at all, and he comes back to the states and gets killed,” his father said.

Officer Brent Thompson, 43, who had worked with the Rapid Transit authority for the last seven years was also among the victims to fall in Thursday night’s attack. He worked as an international police liaison officer, helping train teams of officers in Southern Iraq and in Afghanistan.

Thompson, who had recently welcomed his third grandchild, leaves behind a wife along and six grown children from a previous marriage.

The third officer identified is 40-year-old Michael Krol, originally from Redford Township, Michigan joined the Dallas Police Department in 2007.
