Phoenix Police had to use pepper spray and tear gas during a Black Lives Matter demonstration to disperse protesters late Friday night.

According to ABC 15, cops arrested three people for throwing rocks at officers and video footage shows demonstrators approaching police when the tear gas is dispersed.

Phoenix Police Chief Yahner said the protesters’ “had their message heard, but the time had come to disperse the crowd.”

The march was organized by Civil rights leader Rev. Jarrett Maupin, who lead the march, which started at 8 p.m. outside Phoenix City Hall. However, Maupin announced they were changing the route of the march to shut down Interstate 10. Around 11 p.m. local time, police had declared the gathering to be an “unlawful assembly.”

Damon Cecil, the PIO for the Arizona State Troopers, announced on Twitter that protesters had thrown rocks at police officers and that one officer had been placed into custody as a result of an altercation with police.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton requested the event to be postponed in the wake of the Dallas ambush attack that killed five officers and injured another seven, but Maupin refused, saying, “We can’t let what happened in Dallas stop us.”

Similar, but mostly peaceful demonstrations took place across the country on Friday including in New York, Boston, Atlanta, Los Lngeles and in Baton Rouge, where Alton Sterling was killed during a confrontation with police officers earlier this week.

Sterling’s death along with the fatal shooting death of Philando Castile during a traffic stop by an officer in suburban Minnesota sparked Thursday night’s events that led to the ambush sniper attack that saw Micah Johnson, 25, open fire killing five police officers and wounding another seven before he was killed by a robot armed with explosives.
