Police in San Bernardino, California said a 9-year-old boy and his father were among three people who were shot dead outside a liquor store late Friday.

During a press conference on Saturday, San Bernardino Police Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said the gunmen had waited for the victims outside the store before opening fire.

Cervantes said as the unsuspecting victims walked outside, the armed suspect came up from behind and fatally gunned down them all down.

The victims are identified as 26-year-old Travon Lamar Williams along with his son, 9-year-old Travon Williams and 25-year-old Samathy Mahan.

Ebony Newman, the mother of Travon Williams, became grief-stricken and collapsed to the pavement after returning to the scene of the shooting on Saturday.

According to the Daily Mail,  Newman had walked to the liquor store on Friday and knew a shooting had occurred. A person at the scene told her an 11-year-old was among the dead victims, not knowing that the dead boy with a sheet covering his face was, in fact, her son.

“He was just a little boy. He was my world, and somebody took that away because they were angry, that’s not right. He didn’t get a chance to live a life,” Newman told KCLA as she yelled through tears.

Cervantes said the motive has not yet been determined. However, investigators believe Mahan, who is a documented gang member, recently paroled, was the intended target.

In an interview with the L.A. Times, Steven Newman, the boy’s grandfather said the child’s father was not affiliated with any gangs, but had no idea know how he knew Mahan.

“Travon’s dad was no gang-banger, he was a dancer and a rapper,” Steven Newman said.

Police appealed to the public for help to identify the gunman who police say fled the scene on foot, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities released grainy, black-and-white surveillance photos of the suspect, whose appearance is partially obscured by a hood.
