Law enforcement officials say a man who fired shots at four Baltimore Police officers with an “AR-15- assault rifle, was shot and killed early Friday.

Spokesman T.J. Smith said four plainclothes cops in an unmarked vehicle responded after hearing the sounds of gunfire coming from an apartment in West Baltimore  and saw a man opening fire with an AR-15 assault rifle late Thursday.

According to the New York Post, two of the cops returned fire after the suspect proceeded to fire the weapon towards the four officers.

The gunman was hit at least once and immediately retreated into the apartment building.

Police units arrived on the scene and surrounded the building after initially thinking there was more than one suspect. A search of the premises uncovered the weapon in a tree line behind the apartment complex.

Officers discovered the suspect who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper extremities. Paramedics rushed the man who wasn’t immediately identified, to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said nobody was injured in the incident including the four officers, who were fitted with outer vests marked “police” on the front and back.

Smith said investigators are looking into the theory that the gunman was trying to lure officers to the scene with the gunfire.“We don’t have a victim. … No one has come forward and said, ‘Hey, I was being shot at,’” he said.

The police officers who discharged their weapon will be put on routine administrative duties, according to officials.
