DEVELOPING –Authorities in Louisiana say Multiple police officers were shot, three fatally in Baton Rouge, early Sunday morning.

According to the Associated Press, the shooting occurred less than 1 mile from the Baton Rouge police headquarters around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning and comes in the wake of the Dallas snier attack that killed five police officers.

Police Sgt. Don Coppola said multiple police agencies responded to reports of officers shot. He added authorities have contained the scene meaning the shooter was either in custody or killed but stop short of revealing the exact number of cops shot or the extent of injuries the officers suffered.

However, The Advocate cited William Daniel, the city’s chief administrative officer who said three police officers were killed and multiple wounded from the Baton Rouge Police and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Departments.

One eyewitness told WWLW-TV, a man donning all black with his face concealed opened fire indiscriminately between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza.

The shooting comes in the wake protests after the July 5th death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, who was shot and killed in an altercation with two white police officers outside a convenience store in a Baton Rouge, La.

Governor John Bel Edwards released a statement on the attack. “This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing,” he said.
