Authorities in Mexico say a U.S. citizen was gunned down in the lobby of the upscale Marriott Hotel in Tijuana last week in what appeared to be a targeted attack.

In a statement by the Baja California Attorney General’s Office, investigators believe the victim,  identified as 37-year-old Jorge Kalb Zarmaei, was targeted in the attack, which also injured his father, 71-year-old Daniel Leon Kalb Konay.

Officials said Jorge Kalb was fatally shot in the chest around  7:30 a.m. in the hotel lobby and died at the scene. His father was taken to a private hospital in the city’s Río Zone.

Both victims were confirmed to be American citizens by the U.S. Department of State Overseas Advisory Council.

According to the San Diego Union Times, Jorge Kalb was a businessman from Miami, who worked as a financial adviser with his father.

Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazarán said he believed the shooting death was “an isolated incident and apparently was directed at these individuals.”

Municipal police arrived less than two minutes after the incident was reported, and by then suspect already had fled, he said.

The Marriott is located near the busy thoroughfare Boulevard Agua Caliente.

Cartel-related violence in Tijuana has caused the homicide rate to surge and a travel advisory remains in effect for the border city and throughout several municipalities in Baja California Sur.
