NYPD narcotics officers arrested a dozen suspects who stand accused of being linked to a Staten Island heroin and cocaine ring. The bust was possible thanks to a new program directed toward discovering where overdose victims obtained their drugs, authorities announced on Friday.

The Overdose Response Initiative was formed back in February because of Staten Island’s high rate of prescription drug and opioid abuse.

Officials with the Staten Island District Attorney’s office and police announced that the new program aided in the apprehension of six alleged dealers.

The DA’s office reported that authorities seized heroin, cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia, while executing search warrants at several different locations.

Six additional suspects, including a 70-year-old woman, were arrested and have been charged with drug possession and drug use, according to the New York Daily News

Michael McMahon, District Attorney, said in a statement that “by investigating all overdoses through our Staten Island Overdose Response Initiative, law enforcement can more effectively take down the dealers responsible for flooding our communities with heroin and other illicit narcotics.”

The investigation was launched in January and involved numerous drug purchases made by undercover cops.

The drug ring was based in Midland Beach, according to McMahon. Associated drug dealers were also caught distributing drugs to other neighborhoods including Dongan Hills, New Dorp, and Port Richmond.
