Authorities arrested a Malawian sex worker, who is HIV-positive, on Tuesday after the BBC News network in the U.K. had reported he had sex with underage girls.

Eric Aniva goes by the nickname “Hyena” in his secluded community in southern Malawi is traditionally paid to have sexual relations with young girls after they first menstruate.

In Malawi culture, if the girl refuses, it is believed that her family will be cursed with a disease. “Hyenas” are also paid to have sex with widows or women that have abortions, as a means of “sexual cleansing.”

In an interview with BBC’s Ed Butler, Aniva, who has reportedly had sex with approximately 104 women, said, “Some girls are 12 or 13 years old, but I prefer them older … All these girls find pleasure in having me as their hyena.”

However, Aniva also stated he’s never revealed his HIV status to the families that hire him. His failure to disclose his status is ultimately what led to his arrest following President Peter Mutharika’s request that authorities investigate his BBC interview.

A spokesperson said in a statement:“All people involved in this malpractice should be held accountable for subjecting their children and women to this despicable evil.”

Aniva has two wives, one of whom is a former client, and five children including a 2 1/2-year-old daughter. He explained to Butler that he would never let his daughter sleep with a hyena, and pledges to stop taking part in the tradition himself.

“Not my daughter. I cannot allow this.”
