A Memphis, Tennessee woman was arrested after she tried to escape from police custody by biting an officer to give him her HIV infection.

WREG News Channel 3 reported 38-year-old Dayton Smith has been charged with a number of offenses after she resisted her arrest during a drug seizure. The woman, who has HIV, allegedly attempted to bite the officer’s arm during the fight.

The woman is currently in custody for resisting arrest, drug possession, aggravated assault, and the “criminal exposure” of officers to HIV.

Authorities reported that Smith was stopped for having expired tags, and police soon realized she did not have insurance and was driving with a suspended license. After a search was conducted, they also discovered crack cocaine and marijuana.

After she was put into the back of the police car, reports indicate that she was banging on the vehicle’s window telling officers that she needed to use the restroom. When the cops took her out of the squad car, she broke free and attempted to flee. As law enforcement tried to restrain her, she bit one of the officers.

The police report also indicates that Smith was trying to use her car keys as a weapon. Officers stated that the woman “had her keys between her fingers and was swinging at the officer.”

The officer was examined and is now on the lookout for the virus. After the scuffle, Smith informed medical personnel that she had AIDS.

The suspect is being held on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 11th.
