A mother and her four-year-old child were shot and killed as they were walking back home from grocery shopping in California.

The Daily Mail reported that 26-year-old Carina Mancera and her 4-year-old daughter Jennabel Anaya were shot at approximately 10 pm in Long Beach.

Officers, who were dispatched to the scene to investigate reports of gunfire, discovered Mancera with multiple gunshot wounds, and her daughter with only one bullet wound.

The mother was declared dead at the scene, and the girl was brought to the hospital in critical condition. However, the 4-year-old later succumbed to her injuries and died.

The child’s father, Luis Anaya, was present with his wife and kids at the time of the shooting but was not injured in the attack.

He told the LA Times in an interview that a man wearing a mask approached the family as they were crossing the street before he pulled out a firearm and began shooting.

Although police have not yet verified Anaya’s account of what happened, Anaya informed police he has no indication of who would want to harm his wife and daughter. Police have not yet determined any suspects or a motive.

Anaya stated, “I couldn’t make his face. When I tried to look at him, he shot at me.”

Law enforcement officials initially believed that the incident was a drive-by shooting. However, they later retracted that assumption, citing that the investigation is still “very much ongoing.”

Bystander descriptions appear to contradict Anaya’s statement that he was with his family at the time of the shooting, with neighbors reporting that the man was running toward his wife and daughter from his apartment after the shooter opened fire.

Family members told ABC7 that the family had just pulled up in front of their apartment when the shots began.

Mancera and Jennabel left the store with lighter groceries, while Anaya was collecting the heavier ones. Their relatives indicated that is when the masked criminal approached the pair and began shooting.

One eyewitness said he noticed the suspected shooter get out the backseat of a white four-door Honda Civic and walked up to the family.

After the two had been shot, the witness said the man jumped back in the car and left.

Mournful relatives assembled at the site where Mancera and her daughter were killed on Sunday, with her mother crying ‘por quĂ©?’, according to KNBC.

Authorities are currently investigating security footage from nearby cameras.
