Mexican authorities, along with Interpol, have captured one of the most-wanted drug traffickers in the world during a raid on Sunday.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) announced the arrest of Gabino Peralta, also known as El Pony or El Amigo, who was wanted by Interpol for the trafficking of cocaine and heroin in several countries including the United States.

In a statement, the PGR said Peralta led a dangerous criminal organization based in the strife-ridden state of Michoacan.

According to¬†Proceso, Peralta is the son of Gabino ‘El Boni’ Peralta, a top figure of the Knights Templar drug cartel who was arrested in Coyuca, Guerrero, in December 2015.

The younger Peralta is the subject of an extradition request by the United States government for a drug trafficking indictment out of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The 41-year-old Peralta was captured during a joint raid by the federal police and Interpol in the municipality of Ciudad Altamirano, in the southern state of Guerrero.

“This subject is charged with leading a criminal group dedicated to the traffic of cocaine and heroin into the United States, which is why he was wanted by the authorities in that country,” the agency said.

Peralta was transferred under heavy guard to Mexico City where he will be processed for extradition to the United States.
