Former English soccer star Dalian Atkinson died early Monday after police shot him with a taser in the British town of Telford, Sky News in the U.K. reported.

The 48-year-old former striker for English Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday died of cardiac arrest after an incident where he was shot by a police officer’s taser.

Police reportedly responded to the home believed to be Atkinson’s elderly father after receiving calls for the “safety of an individual.” Officials said Atkinson received medical attention after he was tased, but died 90 minutes later.

In a statement released Monday, West Mercia Police announced the launching of an investigation into Atkinson’s death.

According to the statement, officers responded to “reports concerning the safety of an individual” around 1.30 a.m. on Monday.

“Upon arrival, officers deployed a Taser on a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, but was later pronounced dead at approximately 3 a.m.” the statement read.

Authorities released no further details into Atkinson’s death including why police were called and what caused the officers to deploy the taser.

As news of began to spread on Monday, former clubs and teammates took to social media to pay tribute to Atkinson.

“The thoughts of everyone at Wednesday are with the friends and family of Dalian Atkinson this morning. RIP,” Sheffield Wednesday wrote.

“RIP Dalian Atkinson. You’ll never be forgotten!” Aston Villa tweeted from the club’s official account.

“Terrible news about Dalian Atkinson. Losing his life after being tasered by police. Thoughts are with this fine footballer’s family,” Former England star and current broadcaster Gary Lineker wrote on his Twitter account.
