A former student in California, who fathered a child at 16-years-old with his English teacher in 2013, has won a multi-million dollar court judgment from his former school district.

The unnamed student, who is now 21-years-old, will reportedly be awarded $6 million, CBS News reported.

Redlands Unified School District personnel blamed the entire situation on Laura Whitehurst, the man’s former teacher, and acknowledged no wrongdoing by reaching a settlement.

Tom DeLapp, a spokesperson for the district responded to the court judgment in a statement: “In the long run, $6 million is high, but it could have been much higher if this had been left to an empathetic jury in another city looking past the facts to find a financial scapegoat for the unprofessional, criminal actions of one individual.”

The previous AP English teacher gave birth to a girl back in June 2013 after taking part in a year-long relationship with the male student.

Whitehurst faced 41 felony counts but accepted a plea bargain after agreeing to plead guilty to six of the charges.

The year after the affair, Vince Finaldi, the student’s attorney, initiated a lawsuit against the school district claiming that they “turned a blind eye” to the inappropriate behavior.

Finaldi stated: “The size of this settlement represents the gravity of the damage done to this young victim and his family and it also highlights the extreme malfeasance and neglect by school officials who turned a blind eye to the criminal conduct of a teacher and failed to protect a student.”

The lawsuit alleged that the district neglected to notify the student’s parents after there was evidence to believe that sexual abuse was occurring.

The relationship reportedly began back in 2012, when the teen was only 16-years-old.

The Daily Mail reported that the student was present for the birth of their daughter and currently shares custody of the child, however, there is a no contact order between the former student and Whitehurst.
