A spiraling wave of cartel-related  violence  just south of the Rio Grande has continued to transform Northern Mexico’s border region into a war zone as security forces clash with heavily armed cartel gunmen.

On Thursday a gun battle involving Mexican soldiers and Tamaulipas State Police quickly evolved into rolling shootouts that left four dead and another ten injured.

A state police patrol spotted a staged meeting of a cartel convoy of vehicles, which turned out to be an ambush, igniting a firefight in the streets of Miguel Aleman on Thursday.

The well-armed purported Gulf Cartel members disabled police vehicles using road spikes and overwhelmed officers with high-powered assault weapons.

The assailants also destroyed one police SUV using hand grenades, injuring five police officers on board, all of whom sustained severe burns. Another two officers were also reportedly shot during the gun battle.

Mexican army soldiers and federal police officers rushed to the scene after receiving desperate calls for backup igniting a series of rolling shootouts throughout the border city.

The intense cartel-related violence prompted city officials to place local schools on lockdown. A student at a nearby college suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg after getting hit by a stray bullet but is expected to recover.

Miguel Aleman Mayor Ramiro Cortez Barrera took to social media to issue alerts to town residents urging extreme caution in the wake of the violent clashes.

“Sadly we are living through situations of risk in Miguel Aleman; I ask you to be extremely careful and if possible to stay indoors until federal and state authorities tell us it is safe to do so,” Cortez said in a social media post.

Cartel operatives in two SUV’s who managed to flee the gun battle in Miguel Aleman fired upon soldiers at a Bridge toll station before crashing into booths where military forces had established checkpoints in the nearby city of Camargo, just south of Rio Grande City, Texas.

Often referred to as the ‘cradle of drug trafficking,’ the town of Miguel Aleman, which comprises of the municipalities of Guerrero, Mier, Camargo and Diaz Ordaz, remains at the epicenter of vital smuggling routes.

Much of the cartel-related violence in the Tamaulipas border region is the result of rival criminal groups, who are fighting for control of these important border territories.

Criminal organizations such as the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas utilize the smuggling corridors in the region for the trafficking of illegal narcotics and people into the United States.
