A police officer in Alabama exhibited her affectionate side in a picture that has gone viral after arriving at the scene of an overdose.

Michelle Burton, a Birmingham South Precinct officer, was dispatched in response to a 911 call in a public housing community at approximately nine p.m. on Tuesday night after neighbors discovered the mother and father of four children unresponsive from suspected overdose inside their apartment, AL.com reported.

Investigators said the 30-year-old father had already died from a fatal heroin overdose by the time officers reported to the scene.  The 35-year-old mother was unconscious, but was resuscitated at the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Police discovered their four children inside the apartment, including a 7-year-old girl, 3- and 2-year-old boys, and a 1-month-old infant.

“It was a real sad situation,” David Rockett, South Precinct Lt. told the press. “At least one of the parents survived. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that.”

After the following protocol, police officers brought the children to the precinct where they waited for social workers to arrive and place them into protective custody.

Captain Ron Sellers told AL.com: “A police officer’s job is very hard and very demanding. We come across a lot of scenes of a tragic nature, especially when children are involved.”

Burton was pictured holding the one-month-old infant inside the precinct and her husband Brian Button, a Jefferson County Sheriff Sergeant, posted the moving picture on Facebook.

The post read: “Last night, my wife Michelle Burton told me she would be late getting off work because of a call she was on where the parents of 4 small children had both overdosed. Michelle said the father was dead, and the mother was critical.”

“She spent the rest of the night taking care of these babies. She got home at four this morning. I’ve never seen her more beautiful than in this picture. What an incredible woman,” he added.
