Authorities in Mexico say they have captured an alleged top drug trafficker and money launderer wanted by the United States federal government.

On Monday, Mexico’s National Security Commissioner Renato Sales Heredia announced the arrest of Martin Avendano Ojeda Guadencio, a top operator for the Sinaloa cartel in the state of Jalisco and alleged lieutenant for Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García.

According to CBS News, Ojeda Guadencio was captured Friday near the western city of Guadalajara. Sales said Avendano Ojeda crashed his SUV and injured a federal police officer while trying to evade arrest. He was allegedly carrying about 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of cocaine and two guns at the time of his arrest.

Sales said Avendano Ojeda crashed an SUV, injuring a federal police officer while trying to evade arrest. He was allegedly carrying about 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of cocaine and two guns at the time of his arrest.

Additionally, Avendano Ojeda allegedly facilitated the smuggling of drugs into the United States as the head of a cell in the territories of Ensenada, Comondu, and Loreto, Baja California Sur, where the Sinaloa Cartel is currently enthralled in a dispute with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Sales Heredia confirmed the detainee is the subject of an extradition to the United States for multiple alleged drug trafficking offenses.

In 2001, the U.S. Treasury Department identified Martin Guadencio Avendano Ojeda as a top drug trafficker who led a money-laundering and drug distribution network in Culiacan for the Sinaloa cartel.

Avendano Ojeda’s brother Hector Manuel, alias “El Meño,” also faces an extradition order to the United States for drug crimes and is currently in custody after his arrest back in June.
