Federal forces in Mexico captured an alleged top drug trafficker for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who is the subject of an arrest warrant for extradition requested by the US government.

In a statement, Mexico’s Attorney General (PGR) confirmed the suspect’s capture, identified as Victor Zapién Venegas, an operator for the CJNG in the state of Baja California, where the criminal group is currently engaged in an ongoing turf war with the Sinaloa Cartel

Zapién Venegas’ arrest stems from an official extradition order out of the Southern District Court of the State of California, where he faces charges listed in a drug trafficking indictment.

The statement said elements of the Federal Police arrested Zapién Venegas in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California as he traveled in an SUV without firing a single shot along with the driver of the vehicle.

According to Mexican news outlet Proceso, security forces also discovered six packages of cocaine inside the vehicle.

The PGR said the accused drug trafficker is charged with alleged organized crime offenses U.S. federal prosecutors allege Zapién Venegas is responsible for the trafficking and distribution of cocaine from Colombia and Peru to Mexico, and subsequently destined for the United States.

Additionally, He also stands accused of operating an elaborate “money laundering” network.

Zapién Venegas was transferred to the Attorney General’s Office, based in the state of Baja California, while the driver of the vehicle was presented to the ministerial authority to determine his involvement within the violent organized criminal group.

The arrest of Zapién Venegas is the latest blow against one of the two most powerful organized criminal groups operating in Mexico.

According to an annual report released by President Enrique Pena Nieto’s Administration, an ongoing military-led operation launched in May 2015 has so far resulted in the arrests of 2,500 members of the CJNG.

The operation dubbed ‘Operation Jalisco’ is part of a sustained effort to confront the threat posed by the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, which has shown a propensity for violent attacks against government forces.
