Authorities in California have arrested a suspect in last month’s shooting death of rap artist Kid Cali.

Los Angeles Police officials said officers apprehended a 19-year-old man from Inglewood, California man on Monday for the rapper’s murder at a house party in Granada Hills in August.

Prosecutors with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office charged Kenny Birdine, 19, on Tuesday with first-degree murder on Tuesday in connection with Kid Cali’s murder, whose real name is Justine Lishey.

Birdine remains in custody on a $3.1 million bail. Officials said investigators believe the fatal shooting was gang motivated but refused to release any further details, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.

Over a hundred people attended a house party in Granada hills when an armed suspect opened fire in the backyard of the home, hitting Lishey and two other people back on August 20th,

Witnesses told police at some point Lishey and the armed assailant had gotten into some sort of altercation before gunfire erupted.

Emergency responders rushed Lishey to a local hospital where he died a short time later. The two other suspects survived the attack.

Dorthea DeVilla, a close friend of the rapper, described him as a well-known figure within the Los Angeles hip hop community who got along with everyone.

“He’s a great person, he has a good heart and he’s going to be missed, not just by me, but by everybody,” DeVilla said.

Following his death, fellow West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg posted a tribute to Kid Cali on his Instagram account, which included a photo and message that read @kidcali_oso “rest well young g.”
