Gun battle erupts on the streets of Philadelphia

Chaos erupted on the streets of West Philadelphia after a deranged gunman opened fire on a police officer setting off a wild gun battle on Friday evening.

Police said two people died in the violence including the armed assailant and an innocent bystander. Two police officers and three civilians were also wounded.

Authorities said around 11:20 p.m. an unidentified male suspect walked up to a police patrol car and reportedly shot Sgt. Sylvia Young through the window up at least eight times in the Walnut Hill neighborhood.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said the 19-year veteran of the police department remains in stable condition at an area hospital, thanks to her protective vest.

Ross said a twisted note allegedly containing anti-law enforcement ramblings was discovered nearby, which even named a parole officer as a specific target, according to Fox 29.

The armed suspect immediately fled the scene and opened fire indiscriminately, shooting a security guard in the leg at a nearby bar.

The gunman then proceeded to use a woman as a human shield as cops descended on the scene before shooting her in the leg and fleeing once again.

Authorities said the suspect proceeded to randomly fire his weapon as he ran through the streets, hitting a couple sitting in a parked car.

Emergency responders rushed the two victims to a local hospital where the woman died a short time later. Doctors said the male victim remains in critical condition.

A University of Pennsylvania campus police officer identified as Ed Miller joined two other cops in pursuing the armed suspect on foot, who was eventually cornered in an alley.

The officers managed to kill the armed madman during an exchange of gunfire. Miller remains in stable condition after sustaining a gunshot injury to his leg during the gun battle.

Police locked down the area early Saturday as they searched for a possible second suspect.
