A military operation in Mexico has intercepted a delivery of a large cache of weapons intended for delivery to members of the Sinaloa criminal organization in Culiacan, seizing seven airplanes in the process.

According to information provided by Ríodoce, the operation involving a five-team, 150 member reaction force tracked the shipment from Mexicali.

Mexican Army General Alfonso Duarte Múgica said the reaction team first arrested a suspect traveling aboard a Silverado containing small arms around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Duarte Mugica said around 11:30 a.m., troops intercepted an aircraft on an airstrip located in the village of Benito Juarez.

The pilot reportedly sought to take off in an attempt to flee as soldiers stormed the airstrip, but one of the military trucks crossed the runway hitting one of the aircraft’s wings, sending the plane corralling into a wooded area.

Additionally, seven airplanes discovered inside of a hanger were also seized during the operation.

Officials reported two soldiers injured in the operation but are not considered life threatening.

Senior law enforcement officials said the weapons were destined for operators with the Sinaloa criminal organization in Culiacan with the sons of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman as the intended recipients.

The Sinaloa criminal organization have also been engaged in a war in the mountainous villages Badrigurato, the hometown of ‘Chapo’ Guzman.

Dozens of gunmen led by Aureliano Guzman Loera Guano,El Chapo’s’ brother, stormed the towns of Huixiopa, Badiraguato previously held by the Beltran Leyva Organization, who were responsible for an attack on Guzman’s hometown of La Tuna in June.

Daily gun battles as a result of the cartel war have led to the displacement of hundreds of families who fled the mountainous region seeking safety in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan.

The intense violence has also prompted schools to suspend classes according to Gomer Monarrez, the Secretary of Public Education of Sinaloa.
