The Mexican Attorney General (PGR) announced the capture of a regional leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in the state of Guanajuato.

A joint operation involving the Mexican Navy, police, and state prosecutors’ offices led to the capture of Misael Lopez Rodriguez, identified as the head of the CJNG, in charge of the distribution of drugs in southern Guanajuato and also oversaw criminal activities in the neighboring municipalities of Michoacan and Queretaro.

The Guanajuato prosecutor’s office identified the cartel leader as “one of the major criminal targets in the state.”

Lopez Rodriguez, known as “El Misa,” is accused of murdering a fellow cartel member in Salvatierra for failing to pay money derived from drug dealing and extortion profits, Mexico’s Proceso reported.

According to officials, Lopez Rodriguez is also accused of orchestrating the murders of two other accomplices in the municipality of Cereso Valle de Santiago.

Additionally, last week Mexican authorities arrested Victor Zapién Venegas, a top operator for the CJNG in the state of Baja California, where the criminal group is currently engaged in an ongoing turf war with the Sinaloa Cartel.

The AG’s Office said a judge issued an arrest warrant for Zapién Venegas’ in compliance with an official extradition order out of the Southern District Court of California, where he faces a criminal indictment for drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

The captures of Lopez Rodriguez and Zapién Venegas’ are the latest blows delivered against the CJNG as part of a sustained effort by Mexican authorities to weaken the violent drug cartel led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes alias ‘El Mencho.’

A recent report by President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government to the Mexican Congress claimed an ongoing military-led nationwide effort targeting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel dubbed “Operation Jalisco” which began in May 2015, has resulted in the arrests of over 2,500 members of the criminal organization.
