Authorities are investigating the motive behind the execution of a young couple by a group of gunmen near the Texas border on the banks of the Rio Grande River, before setting their car on fire.

Investigators in the Mexican state of Coahuila were dispatched to the banks of the Rio Grande River near the neighborhood of Santa Maria where they discovered a Jeep Commander immersed in flames. Neighbors contacted police after recognizing that the vehicle was on fire.

As law enforcement officials approached the burning car, they noticed a man and a woman laying in a puddle of blood. The victims were shot in the head, but the woman was somehow still alive.

According to Breitbart Texas, the woman was rushed to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Soon after the killings, officials identified the victims as 24-year-old Montserrat Reyes-Galaviz and 28-year-old Valentin Guerrero.

The State Attorney General’s Office said they have arrested a suspect, identified as Luis Leonel Morales Salas for aggravated kidnapping and homicide in connection with the couple’s murder.

The AG’s office said Morales Salas, who allegedly confessed to his role in the murders was arrested after a brief manhunt.

Authorities have not yet released a motive for the double-homicide. However, the border city of Piedras Negras has a lengthy history of being a drug trafficking passage for the Los Zetas drug cartel.

Contrary to other cartels, Los Zetas have sought to differentiate themselves through their ruthlessness and bloody methods of executions.

Luis Leonel Morales Salas was arrested and charged with the couple’s murder, police have yet to release a motive.

As reported by JammedUp News, earlier this week state authorities in Coahuila discovered the body of a truck driver from South Texas, who was reported missing last Thursday.

Police officers discovered the badly decomposed body of 34-year-old Oscar Ramon Lopez Alfaro, a commercial trucker driver from the Texas border city of Eagle Pass.

Officials said police found Lopez Alfaro’s remains on a ranch near Piedras Negras after receiving an anonymous call.

The Texas resident was last seen crossing the border from Eagle Pass into Piedras Negras last Thursday. Police officials have not indicated whether Lopez Alfaro’s killing was drug-related.

However, Investigators told local media outlets that evidence suggests Lopez-Alfaro was kidnapped by unknown gunmen shortly after crossing the border.
