Chinese law enforcement officials say a man living in a village outside of Beijing killed his parents and proceeded to carry out murders of his 17 neighbors in an attempt to conceal his crime.

An investigation revealed that 27-year-old Yang Qingpei got into a fight with his parents over money on Wednesday and brutally murdered them. Qingpei became fearful that he would be suspected as the killer, and he then executed 17 neighbors in the village of Yema.

It is unclear how the suspect, carried out the murders.

According to the Associated Press, the suspect was apprehended in the provincial capital of Kunming, on Thursday, only a few hours after the bodies were discovered.

The incident is considered to be one of the bloodiest mass homicides in recent years in the country, where fatal violent attacks on schools and public transportation have been blamed on individuals holding animosity against their families, neighbors, or society overall.

Because guns are strictly regulated in China, mass murders are typically carried out with poison, knives, homemade explosives or arson.
