Law enforcement officials have apprehended an alleged cartel hitman who was allegedly responsible for the slaying of a young couple near the Texas border in Piedra Negras, Coahuila.

As JammedUp News reported armed cartel members brutally murdered a young couple and ignited their vehicle in flames  last month.

The two victims were identified as 24-year-old Montserrat Reyes-Galaviz and 28-year-old Valentin Guerrero.

Officers with Coahuila’s Investigative Police named Luis Leonel Morales Salas, a reputed cartel hitman linked to Los Zetas as one of the likely suspects behind the double murder.

Authorities attempted to arrest the man during a traffic stop on the city’s south side.

However, the suspect fled and opened fire at the officers while the state police began shooting back. The fleeing killer ran a taxi driver off the road, causing him to crash. Police finally caught up with Morales Salas shortly after that.

During an interrogation, Morales Salas admitted to his role in the murder in what police are calling an “ajuste de cuentas” or “cartel reckoning.” The man faces murder and aggravated kidnapping charges.

The two victims had links to organized crime. Montserrat Reyes-Galaviz was allegedly an accountant for one unit of the Los Zetas cartel that is based in Coahuila, Breitbart News reported.

Her boyfriend, Valentin Guerrero, worked in human smuggling for the Los Zetas. The cartel faction is known as Cartel Del Noreste or “CDN” and is the group currently in control of Coahuila.
