The relatives of aspiring boxer Trendon Franklin who was brutally gunned down in Brooklyn, finally experienced a bit of closure on Wednesday when the convicted killer was sentenced to 25 years to life behind bars.

“Today is closure for my son’s murder. This has been a huge impact for my family. I have not been able to sleep peacefully,” said Donna Grant, the mother of  Trendon Franklin, as she read her victim impact statement.

The 20-year-old victim and two of his friends were having a late night conversation back in 2012 when Lawrence Harris cornered them and began shooting, according to the New York Daily News.

The three men were hit as they fled, but Franklin was fatally injured.

According to his family, Franklin worked, went to college, and was training for a boxing match when he was killed.

Ken Thompson, a Brooklyn District Attorney, stated: “This defendant’s senseless act of gun violence makes him unfit to remain part of society. He deserves to be in prison for many years and pay for the life he took and the injuries he caused.”

The 24-year-old suspect, who was convicted after two jury trials of assault, attempted assault, murder, and other charges, still continues to declare his innocence, said Harris’ lawyer Robert Walters.

Walters indicated that his client plans to appeal the conviction.
