A soldier was killed following an intense gun battle between the Mexican Army and cartel gunmen just south of the Texas border in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico on Wednesday.

The violence erupted after a military convoy from the 16th Motorized Cavalry Regiment confronted a group of heavily armed members of Los Zetas just after midnight near the Nuevo Laredo neighborhood of Cavazos Lerma.

Attempting to elude capture, the Zetas gunmen immediately opened fire on the soldiers sparking a fierce exchange. One soldier identified as Communications Specialist Yovani Calderon suffered a fatal gunshot wound and later died at a local-area hospital.

Two of the suspected Zetas gunmen were also killed in the firefight, Blog Del Narco reported.

Authorities launched an intense manhunt for the remaining cartel operatives, which lasted through the night, but no arrests have been made, Mexican officials revealed.

Last month, another soldier was killed by friendly fire during a firefight with gunmen in the nearby border city of Reynosa, which is a known Gulf Cartel stronghold.

Calderon’s death comes a week after five soldiers were killed in an ambush attack in Culiacan, the state capital of Sinaloa.

As JammedUp News previously reported,  over 50 gunmen linked to the Sinaloa cartel led by Alfredo and Ivan Guzman Salazar ambushed a military convoy last Friday, killing five soldiers and wounding another ten.

The Army convoy was escorting an ambulance transporting a Sinaloa cartel lieutenant who was injured in an earlier confrontation with the military in the mountains of Badirgurato, where a violent war has erupted between the Sinaloa and Beltran Leyva Cartels.

Mexican law enforcement officials have publicly implicated the sons of El Chapo in the attack.

However, Guzman’s sons staunchly denied having any involvement and denounced the deadly attack in Culiacan through one of El Chapo’s attorneys.
