Authorities in Mexico say two soldiers died and another was seriously injured on Monday after a military helicopter crashed in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the border state of Tamaulipas.

According to Proceso, sources said the MD-530 helicopter with a crew made up of two pilots, both lieutenants and a lieutenant colonel who traveled as an aerial observer.

Officials confirmed one of the pilots and the observer both lost their lives in the crash. A Mexican Federal Police helicopter arrived at the scene and airlifted the sole survivor to a hospital in Ciudad Victoria where he remains in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials refused to say what caused the crash or whether the aircraft was intentionally shot down.

Sources told Breitbart Texas that evidence suggested the aircraft had come under fire before going down.

Ciudad Victoria has been ground zero for a brutal cartel civil war that has erupted between rival factions of Los Zetas.

Cartels including the Zetas have in the past had success shooting down helicopters on both sides of the border.

Two soldiers were killed after a Mexican military helicopter went down in Tamaulipas on Monday

In July 2015, a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) helicopter was forced down on the Texas border.

The aircraft provided air support for an anti-narcotics interdiction squad attempting to intercept a drug shipment near the Laredo sector in Texas, just across from Nuevo Laredo, when it was forced down by heavy fire from purported Los Zetas gunmen on the Mexican side of the border. No one was injured in the incident.

Just last month Knight Templar gunmen managed to down a state police helicopter with a high powered .50 caliber assault rifle in the strife-ridden state of Michoacan, killing the pilot and two officers on board.

Back in May 2015, operatives with the Jalisco New Generation cartel used an RPG rocket launcher to bring down a military chopper in Guadalajara.
