According to authorities, a teen was critically wounded earlier this week by Los Zetas cartel gunmen in the Mexican border city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila with a shotgun blast to the face. The victim managed to survive the attack but lost both of his eyes.

The recent shooting was an apparent ambush by the cartel members who had been riding in a pickup truck. Coahuila law enforcement officials announced that the victim had been identified as 18-year-old Carlos Alfonso Chapa Silos.

The shooting occurred when Chapa was driving a Chevrolet Malibu with some friends when the pickup slammed into the car to force them to stop.

The men got out of the car and opened fire on Chapa with a shotgun.

The victim’s friends drove off and rushed him to a local hospital as they called for help. Emergency medical personnel and police caught up with the teens in one of the city’s main intersections where paramedics loaded Chapa into an ambulance and raced him to the hospital.

Chapa suffered injuries on his face, neck, midsection and buttocks, and lost both eyes due to the severity of the gun blast, Breitbart Texas reported.

Piedras Negras has been caught in the midst of brutal cartel-related violence as rival groups of the Los Zetas cartel fight for control over lucrative drug territories. In early October, shooters murdered a woman as she was walking out of a local bar.

The killers shot her in the chest and managed to evade capture. Just days before the incident, cartel gunmen brutally murdered a young couple and set their car on fire on the outskirts of Piedras Negras, just south of the Texas border.

The ongoing violence in Piedras Negras is an extension of the cartel brutality that has taken over Tamaulipas, where the Grupo Bravo and Vieja Escuela factions of the Los Zetas have been fighting the Cartel Del Noreste (CDN).
