A Utah man who gave his 5-year-old child some blankets and left her in the freezing cold on an Ogden college campus has been charged with child abandonment, according to authorities.

On Friday, 41-year-old Adrian Justin Sanchez was taken into custody on charges of child abandonment after security footage at Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College captured the man leaving the little girl at around 5 a.m. on October 9th. He is seen in the video pointing to the ground before she sat down on top of the blankets.

A security guard on the campus found the girl crying more than two hours later outside of the daycare where investigators said her father left her, Fox13 reported.

Employees at the two daycare facilities on campus told police that they didn’t know the child. Law enforcement officials later released the girl to her mother.

“It’s very hard, he has put her through so much,” the child’s mother, who only identified herself as Gena, said in an interview with KSTU-TV.

She declared that she intends to file for an order of protection against the man, and will petition to gain full custody of the child.

“I’m scared for my daughter,” the mother said. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to protect her.”

Ogden police said that investigators were still trying to figure out a motive behind Sanchez’s actions.

“We would have like to have asked those questions — why you left a five-year-old at the campus, unattended, without a parent, in the early morning hours?” Ogden police Lieutenant Tim Scott stated.

“He wasn’t able to provide that for us. He wasn’t cooperative with investigations,” Scott added.
