Narcotics officers in New York conducted early morning raids on Wednesday, arresting 14 members of a multi-state drug trafficking ring based in the Bronx who used boxing gear to smuggle over million worth of heroin and cocaine into the U.S.

State Prosecutors indicted 14 suspects including six reputed kingpins Bronx Supreme Court in the alleged drug trafficking ring, which smuggled narcotics from Puerto Rico to Florida, North Carolina, Massachusetts and New York, The New York Daily News reported.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the defendants used the mail to ship boxing equipment and religious statues concealing at least 20 kilos of cocaine and heroin.

Among the co-conspirators charged in the indictment includes 36-year-old Angel Melendez Orsini, the alleged ringleader, who prosecutors said used a contraband cellphone to orchestrate cocaine deals from a prison cell at Miami Federal Prison, where he remains incarcerated for a separate drug trafficking case.

Sneiderman said officers seized over $1.5 million in narcotics during the operation.

Among the co-conspirators charged as major traffickers in the indictment include Orsini, Francisco Vega Cancel, 26; Francisco Vega Vasquez, 51; Edwin Vega, 40; Jan Santiago Garcia, 38 and Juan Rodriguez, 50.

All six ringleaders face life in prison if convicted. The eight other people charged face up to 20 years behind bars.
