The government of Mexico narrowly avoided another scandalous and embarrassing episode, after officials allowed Orso Iván Gastelum, alias “El Cholo Ivan” to walk out of a maximum-security prison in Ciudad Juarez last weekend and nobody seemed to know.

We’re not talking about some petty criminal. “El Cholo Ivan,” is the top lieutenant of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and the man pictured with the naked torso in the now famous photo sitting next to Guzman in the back seat Federal Police car last January 8th after both men were captured in Sinaloa.

In an extraordinary decision, a judge ordered Gastelum’s release due to a lack of evidence and allowed him to walk out of the Cefereso Number 9 maximum security prison in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua last weekend.

The detention center, which also houses Guzman, where he currently awaits extradition to the U.S., remains under enhanced security protocols implemented by the Mexican Army.

A military official deployed at the Cefereso Number 9 facility caught wind of El Cholo Ivan’s release and immediately alerted his superiors.

Official sources told El Debate, the Secretariat of National Defense urgently warned the Attorney General’s Office and the Deputy Attorney for Specialized Investigation of Organized Crime (Seido), Gustavo Salas Chávez, neither of whom had any knowledge of El Cholo’s release.

Salas immediately ordered “El Cholo Ivan’s” apprehension. Army officials intercepted Gastelum and re-arrested him minutes after he gained his freedom.

The quick reaction avoided another embarrassing crisis following the escapade that surrounded El Chapo’s prison escape.

The Mexican drug lord managed to flee the Altiplano maximum security prison in July 2015 through a 1.5-mile dugout tunnel, which led directly underneath the shower area of his prison cell.

After spending six months on the run, Mexican marines tracked “El Chapo” to a safe house in the seaside city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa where he was meeting with “El Cholo Ivan.”

Both capos immediately fled through a connecting sewer system but were later apprehended by federal police and Marines.
