Anonymous Content has picked up the film rights to ‘Bones,’ the anticipated book by Joe Tone about how a young federal agent took down a Mexican drug cartel’s horse racing business in Oklahoma and Texas back in 2012.

The book is based on the 2015 Dallas Observer article, “The Rookie and the Zetas,”  how the ruthless Mexican drug cartel, Los Zetas, reportedly invested millions of dollars into building a world-class horse racing enterprise in the United States before the feds confiscated the business.

Tone wrote about how the Zetas were obsessed with American quarter horses and spent millions of dollars put into creating a world-class horse racing operation in the U.S. before the FBI found out and seized it.

Anonymous Content will have Richard Brown produce the movie, with Steve Golin serving as executive producer. Mauricio Katz (Miss Bala, The Bridge) is also expected to write the film.

Bones is scheduled to be published by One World, which is Random House’s newly rebooted multicultural imprint led by editor Chris Jackson, who recently did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his plans.

Brown stated: “Joe’s original article caught our attention right away, and when he shared the whole story that will be told in the book, it was clear that this had the potential to be a terrific movie. I’m excited to collaborate with Mauricio Katz, who is one of the most talented writers I’ve come across in a long time.”

Tone added, “I can’t imagine a better partner for this material than Anonymous, whose work is consistently smart and inspiring. I’m thrilled that it’ll be Richard and Mauricio bringing this story and these worlds to the screen. It is an exciting story, and also one that requires sensitivity and nuance. Anonymous and Mauricio are perfectly suited to pull it off.”
