Police have released the suspect accused in the shooting death of former Jets running back Joe McKnight without bringing charges.

According to a TMZ, 54-year-old Ronald Gasser, who stands, accused of fatally shooting the 28-year-old USC Trojan star on Thursday afternoon in what police called an apparent road-rage incident just outside New Orleans, was released from custody.

The gossip website citing Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department official said investigators questioned Gasser and released “sometime overnight,”

Additionally, the official told TMZ that although Gasser was “definitely” the gunman who killed McKnight, “questions remain regarding the circumstances surrounding the events that led up to the fatal shooting.”

The investigation remains ongoing and either a grand jury or the district attorney’s office could hear the case to determine whether Gasser will face charges, TMZ reported.

Authorities said McKnight was unarmed and standing outside his vehicle when Gasser shot him several times.
