Authorities in multiple Texas counties just north of the border have been involved in dangerous, high-speed pursuits with SUVs packed with immigrants as they attempt to get around Border Patrol checkpoints.

The pursuits have occurred as human smugglers sought to evade the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints in Sarita or Falfurrias, which is located approximately 80 miles north of the border. The hunts are directly linked to a spike in the number of illegal crossings that have been occurring in recent months.

Bob Meakins and Rick Villarreal, Bee County Sheriff’s Deputies, attempted to pull over the driver of an SUV last week in connection with a traffic violation. The driver raced off to avoid police until he stopped beside the Chase Field Prison Complex, Breitbart Texas reported.

As authorities approached the vehicle to arrest the individuals inside, the driver and 15 illegal immigrants fled on foot into the brush. Local police officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents, and prison authorities did not successfully locate the missing illegals.

One week before that incident, deputies with the Duval and Jim Wells Sheriff’s Offices apprehended nine illegals who attempted to escape after crossing into a small rural city. The group was quickly surrounded with the assistance of Alice Police and Texas State Troopers. Agents with U.S. Border Patrol reported to the scene to apprehend the illegals for further processing and possible deportation.
