A purported gunman assassinated Andrey Karlov, who is the Russian ambassador to Turkey, at an event in the capital of Ankara on Monday, in what officials are calling a targeted attack by radical Islamists, multiple news outlets have reported.

According to CNN Türk, a suspect opened fire on Karlov as he delivered a speech during the opening of an art exhibit at the Cagdas Sanatlar Merkez exhibition hall in the Cankaya district of Ankara, where most of the foreign embassies are located.

Three others were reportedly wounded in the attack. Police later killed the armed assailant.

Haşim Kılıç, a journalist with the Hurriyet Daily News described how chaos erupted after the suspected gunman fired shots into the air sending people fleeing in a panic. He said the assassin then pumped multiple rounds into the Russian ambassador.

Another witness said amid the gunfire; special forces could be seen surrounded the building.

The execution of the Russian ambassador comes days after demonstrators held mass protests against Russia’s involvement in the Syrian conflict.

One image published by Hurriyet shows a man brandishing a gun and two men in suits laying on the ground.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova later announced Ambassador Andrey Karlov had died from his injuries.

The attack comes amid Tuesday’s trip by Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, to Moscow for talks with his Russian and Iranian counterparts, on the Syrian conflict.
