The death toll has risen from a massive explosion that ripped through a well-known Mexico City firework market on Tuesday afternoon, killing 29 people killed and leaving dozens injured, according to Civil Protection officials.

Chief Prosecutor Alejandro Gomez for the state of Mexico confirmed the deaths of 29 people and at least 70 wounded in the blast at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec.

Video of the incident provided by Milenio TV on Tuesday shows large blast followed by a gigantic plume of smoke rising from the market.

Officials said the wounded had been transferred to Vicente Villada Hospital, while firefighters from the State of Mexico and Mexico City along with military and Civil Protection elements worked to secure the area, Proceso reported.

“My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident and my wishes for a quick recovery for the injured,” said President Enrique Pena Nieto via Twitter.
