An international confrontation that unfolded on Twitter between nuclear powers Pakistan and Israel on Saturday was the result of a fake news that surfaced online which underlines the potentially harmful impact such bogus stories can have on sensitive global tensions.

The false narrative involved Pakistan sending troops to Syria.

The fictitious story even prompted a former Israeli defense minister to threaten Pakistan with nuclear attack if it sends troops to Syria.

In response, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Pakistan’s defense minister stressed to Israel that “Pakistan is a nuclear state too.”

However, later Saturday, Israel’s Defense Ministry tweeted that the original story responsible for generating the international firestorm on the website AWD News was “entirely fictitious.”

Fact-checking organizations have identified AWD as a fake news site, The Associated Press reported.

The Israeli government has neither confirmed nor denied having a nuclear arsenal. Pakistan became nuclear capable 1998.

The two nations maintain no diplomatic ties.

Pakistan provided no official acknowledgment to Israel’s response.
