Mexican law enforcement killed five members of the Gulf Cartel during a fierce shootout. Unofficial reports indicate that one of the dead was a commander for the criminal organization.

The battle erupted on Tuesday after authorities received an anonymous tip about a crew of gunmen driving along a dirt road that leads to the city of San Fernando, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

A military convoy located the suspected cartel gunmen in a Dodge Ram and a Mazda CX5.

In an attempt to evade capture, the men opened fire on the military troops who countered the attack, according to Breitbart Texas.

The troops managed to kill all five cartel gunmen without causing any other casualties. The bodies were left on the ground within a cordoned area, and the men appeared to have been killed while grasping their weapons.

Mexican federal authorities were called in to investigate the crime scene. Although the names of the dead have not been revealed, a source with law enforcement point to one of the men as “Comandante Caballero,”

The man was believed to have been the regional leader of the Gulf Cartel in the area of Gonzalez in southern Tamaulipas.

The recent altering of alliances between factions of the Gulf and Los Zetas groups has led to intense power struggles within the criminal organizations and frequent gun battles with the military.
