Police have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect after the body of a North Carolina woman, who disappeared in mid-December, was discovered in the trunk of her car.

Authorities were first contacted by the husband of Nia Hantzopoulos, who was last seen on Thursday, December 15th, at approximately 2 p.m.

At the time, the woman was believed to be traveling to either Pineville or Fort Mill. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said she was driving a silver Toyota Avalon, WSOC-TV reported.

Police said on Tuesday that Hantzopoulos was found dead in the trunk of her vehicle. Police did not reveal where the car was found or how the woman was killed.

A warrant for the arrest of Humberto Alvarez Mendoza, 44, for his alleged role in Hantzopoulos’ murder. Detectives have not indicated what led them to designate him as a suspect or how Mendoza andHantzopoulos knew each other.

The victim’s family fear Mendoza may try to escape justice by fleeing the country.

“She didn’t deserve this, and we don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” Hantzopoulos’ daughter Virginia Karras said.

Anyone with information on Mendoza’s location is asked to immediately contact police or the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team at 704-336-VCAT.
